FAQ
Explain the fee structure for group classes and how are make-up lessons conducted?
We operate on a monthly fee structure for group classes, requiring full payment regardless of attendance to ensure consistent availability of teachers and facilities, and to maintain the quality and experience for all students. To accommodate absences, we offer replacement classes only during other existing group sessions. Alternatively, we ensure that students catch up on missed content during their allotted class, which may require the entire group to spend time relearning. This practice is common in arts schools across Singapore. Your understanding is appreciated, and please feel free to discuss any concerns with us in advance.
Many classes in Singapore allow as to pay per class and offer flexibility to take leave. Is this possible?
Understand that in some streams in Singapore, fees are charged per class, allowing students to pay only for the sessions they attend. Their fees are typically higher per class to account for the variability in attendance. This model offers flexibility for students with irregular schedules or those who prefer occasional attendance. Class fees may vary based on the number of participants to cover the costs of running the session. This structure is suitable for activities where individual participation doesn’t impact the group learning process. Students who opt for this structure will need to attend individual sessions. Regrettably, we do not provide this flexibility for group classes, as absentees are encouraged to catch up on missed lessons either through makeup classes or by reteaching the missed content to the entire group, to maintain the quality of our instructions and students.
Are Examinations compulasory? Will certificates be provided?
Annual examinations are conducted in collaboration with Kala Dham Foundation, India, founded by Guru Mulla Afsar Khan, former senior Kathak tutor at SIFAS, Singapore. Appearing for examinations is optional. Students’ capabilities, commitment, and attendance will be evaluated before they are allowed to sit for examinations. Certificates will be provided upon successful completion of the examination.
Are there performance opportunities?
All students will get to participate in annual students night concert, typically in October / November. Participation is optional, involves a participation fee to cover costs.
For other performances, students will be selected based on their availability, committment to rehearsals, and their performance quality as required.
Dance costumes can be rented if available, or stitched.
How long would it take to learn Kathak?
A person never “finishes” learning any art form. I still continue my learning journey. It would take about 8 years for a student to understand nuances, be able to perform as a soloist and find his/her own style and way of presenting the artform.
My Child is less than 5 years, can learn Kathak?
Introductory sessions can be conducted to develop interest. Please reach out to the teacher.
